For the third year in a row, Mota Italic is hosting the biggest Typo Berlin pre-party and exhibition opening evening.

This Wednesday from 18:00 till late, come by Mota Italic to check out the new exhibition »Word Jazz«, meet the artist Dru Brennan, meet not only the Berlin type crowd, but also many international typoholics visiting from all over the globe.

Mixologist/DJ Kurt will be serving special delicacies: wine, beer, and top shelf cocktails can be enjoyed all evening.

About the exhibition:

Word Jazz is a couple things: its the title of an old jazz LP by Ken Nordine that turns the human voice into both communicator and post-modern musical instrument, and also the title of this exhibit of recent large calligraphic works. Jazz improvisation is high-stakes art in the sense that you constantly push your creative process while others listen along for the ride - to take melodic risks in front of an audience. Graffiti and Zen calligraphy are two writing systems that deploy similar sets of aesthetics and conviction in gesture as in jazz. I sought to explore the possibilities of mixing all three of these art forms together, to use Roman letterforms as the back beat while I solo the tale of each letter’s construction. Each piece’s content is a short-form poetic meditation on a variety of subjects, from loss to love to contemporary art. Ultimately the work is about untangling preconceptions about letters, form, writing and art, and recombining them to create new, pretty possibilities for writing to come.

Written symbols are omnipresent in our culture. They open up the universe of the written word and give us directions in everyday life. But the distinct message inherent in their appearance is often only noticed subliminally. ‘ON–TYPE: Texts on Typography’ conveys the fascination of type design and shows classics from twentieth-century typographic history along with recent examples. The exhibition gathers together theses, manifestos and stocktaking accounts from twentieth-century typography in the German-speaking countries. It also presents type specimens and insiders’ typography magazines, and discusses the central protagonists and important debates in the history of typography regarding legibility, use of small letters in German, and the effects of digitization.

‘ON-TYPE: Texts on Typography’ is an exhibition by the Gutenberg Museum and Mainz University of Applied Sciences / Designlabor Gutenberg, in the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin.

Shoko Mugikura of Just Another Foundry teamed has kindly organised a Japanese calligraphy workshop by Keiko Shimoda to be held here at Mota Italic!

The main details:

19th January 2013, Saturday, 11am

- Max. 8 participants

- 4-5 hours

- The workshop will be in English and all necessary tools are provided

- Please bring €20 to cover the cost for the writing tools and paper

The workshop is intended for those who have interest in Japanese and Chinese calligraphy but never had the opportunity to try it. Even if you don’t know anything about Japanese language, not to worry – we’ll have a short introduction of the Japanese writing systems by Shoko, as well as an explanation of the history and theory of Japanese calligraphy by Keiko.

But the workshop is mostly about practising – it is a wonderful opportunity to learn new writing systems, skills and methods developed in the Far East. You could even try Japanese calligraphy methods to write Latin script.

Keiko is an unusual person to practice both Japanese and Latin calligraphy. Based in London, she produces beautiful invitation cards, certificates and logos etc. in both Latin script and Japanese or Chinese characters. She also sometimes works for films. In fact, you might have already seen her work – her piece appears in the new James Bond Skyfall! To see more her work, please visit her website.

Although not a calligrapher, Shoko will also be around to answer questions on Japanese scripts.

If you’d like to participate, please email to:

workshop_01_2013@justanotherfoundry.com

Lettering vs Calligraphy is a project by Giuseppe Salerno and Martina Flor. It consists of a visual dialogue between a letterer and a calligrapher, where they draw/write a letter responding to a keyword given by a moderator. The adventure aims to explore the capabilities of the two technical approaches. It delivers one letter daily and takes place online, where the visitors are invited to vote for their favorite.

So far, they have battled it out with a “Sophisticated 3”, “Bizarre J”, “Swashy T”, and a “Dynamic n”. The party’s just beginning and it’s one you will want to keep checking daily for new fun and inspiration.

Also, Martina has just launched her beautiful new website this week. And be sure to check out more work and news by Giuseppe who is often presenting terrific calligraphy workshops here in Berlin.

Right now in Berlin is a rather incredible exhibition and lecture series dealing with typography and graphic design in the Middle East. We’ve dropped the ball here at typeinberlin with timely updates… the exhibition is already half over and you may have missed the first few talks.

However, all is not lost. The exhibition is up another week so you still have time. There are three more evenings ok presentations as well!

Tomorrow night is Huda Smitshuijzen-AbiFares of Amsterdam talking about “Arabic Typography as an Agent of Resistance” starting at 19:00.

There will also be talks on Thursday December 6th and the Finnissage will be Sunday December 9th with more presentations!

A bit more info on the exhibition:
The project RIGHT-TO-LEFT focuses on what is currently happening in the Middle East in terms of visual culture and society. The exhibition features over 40 artists and graphic designers, and displays artworks, installations, and hundreds of posters, partly commissioned for the occasion of the Berlin show. The exhibited art and design works are both innovative and forward-looking, presenting cross-cultural references and styles ranging from experimental typography and type-design to street art and graffiti. They often merge Latin and Arab/Persian scripts in sensual, beautiful ensembles with multiple layers of meanings. Poetry, metaphors, and references to the present political situation in the Middle East are recurrently used in the designs.
